Ten on Tuesday - 4/8/2014 - Going Together

I haven't participated on Ten on Tuesday in the longest...

This week, Carole asks us to list Ten Foods That Belong Together:
1. Steak and potatoes - what man (or woman) doesn't like that?
2. Peanut butter and jelly (or honey or bananas or honey and bananas!) - a mainstay in a toddler's diet, but I frequently made myself a sandwich of one of those combinations in the physician dining room.  I think more than one of the docs would've secretly liked to have had one too...
3. Grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup - my mom and I frequently made it for supper when The Husb wasn't going to be joining us.
4. Chips and salsa - I'd have just that for supper sometimes back when I was a bachelorette living the high life on my own.
5. Bacon and eggs - a good way to start the day...although I only eat breakfast when we are traveling anymore...
6. Turkey and dressing - because it's tradition!  Plus, it's yummy together.
7. Pork and applesauce - The Husb will not eat pork without applesauce...he just won't.
8. Corned beef and cabbage - another favorite around here.
9. Fritos and Dr. Pepper - one of my favorite snacks...but I don't have it too often...you know, fat grams, carbs, calories...they sure put a cramp in my style!
10. Cookies and milk - it's what's for dessert.

Now I really have the munchies!!!

Ten on Tuesday - 5/14/2013

Carole asks us to list our Ten Favorite TV Moms. I haven't participated in a while, but I was feeling it today; so, here goes...

1. Sophia Petrillo from The Golden Girls - She reminds me of my mom.
2. Edith Bunker from All in the Family - She is ditzy, but has a wonderful heart.
3. Shirley Partridge from The Partridge Family - She is cool and a great role model for working moms.
4. Carol Brady from The Brady Bunch - I'm so jealous that she has an Alice.
5. Meredith Grey from Grey's Anatomy - She is a good mother even though she doesn't really feel it yet.
6. Ann Romano from One Day At a Time - I like her for being a strong role model - plus, I was quite the women's libber back then.
7. Evelyn Harper from Two and a Half Men - She says the stuff to and about her boys out loud  that other mothers are thinking.
8. Nora Walker from Brothers and Sisters - She's a meddler, but she allows her kids to be who they are.
9. Claire Huxtable from The Cosby Show - She is another good role model...and I admire the calm way she parents.
10. Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond - She is just so fer realz.

Ten on Tuesday - 12/4/2012

This week, Carole asks us to list our 10 Favorite Holiday Albums.  I don't own ten, but I will tell you about the ones I have:

1.  Natalie Cole's Holly & Ivy -  I just sing along with Natalie at the top of my lungs, usually in the car...but only when I am alone.
2.  The Judy Garland Christmas Album - Judy sings, as well as various artists from yesteryear.
3.  Kenny G's Miracles The Holiday Album
4.  Kenny G's Faith A Holiday Album - You can say that I loves me some Kenny G.
5.  That Christmas Feeling - It's a compilation album with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Bing Crosy, Mel Torme and more...
6.  Harry Connick, Jr.'s When My Heart Finds Christmas - I love his voice.  He sounds like the greats in #5.
7.  40 Years, A Charlie Brown Christmas - It has various more contemporary artists performing classics.

I like to start listening to Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving until New Year's Day, (and then I am done for the year).  I put it on the tee vee when I am cooking or doing things around the house.  I listen to it in my car.  I love to take the time to drive around the neighborhood when coming home from wherever to look at the lights and decorations, while listening to Christmas music.

I'm listening to Christmas music on the tee vee right now.

Ten on Tuesday - 11/6/2012

Carole's topic today is Ten Things on My Mind Right Now.  Here are the  thoughts jumbling around in my head:

1.  Is that the upstairs toilet running again?
2.  The kitchen cabinets need a little decrapification.
3.  I could use that yarn I won to make some hats and send them to hurricane victims.
4.  When is my next hair appointment?
5.  I should schedule pedicure appointments for this month and next and have them on the books, instead of trying to get one at the last minute when no one can fit me in their schedule.
6.  I need a massage and I have no time.
7.  What can I make for dinner tonight?
8.  Where is my phone?
9.  Thanksgiving is coming...
10.  I need to get myself together, because I need to go vote!

Ten on Tuesday 8/14/2012 - TV Trays and TV Dinners

This week's topic in 10 Favorite TV Shows from Childhood.  [To Carole - I think you are younger than I am, even though there may be some overlap.]

Anyway, we watched a lot of tv growing up.  That's how my momma learned how to speak English; so, it was a win-win for the whole family.  I know that there are tons more than ten that were my favorites, but I'll stick to my young teen and under years - that should narrow down the list a little:

1.  Dark Shadows - My friend Patty and I would run to our respective homes after school to watch this gothic soap opera.  Then, we would discuss the previous day's happenings on the playground during PE the next day.  I had a little crush on David Hennesy - He played David Collins.
2.  The Monkees - I fell in love and married Davy Jones while watching this show.
3.  The Partridge Family - I cheated on Davy with David Cassidy, and luckily - he never found out...
4.  Medical Center - I wanted to grow up and become a nurse to work with people like Dr. Joe Gannon.  (Whew!  No Davids on this show...) 
5.  Green Acres - I always did identify more with Lisa...
6.  Bewitched - Ah, if only twitching my nose could get things done around here...

and I really miss fun, variety shows such as:
7.  The Ed Sullivan Show
8.  The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour
9.  The Carol Burnett Show
10. The Red Skelton Hour

There are so many others...but I am going to stop now.

Ten on Tuesday - 7/17/2012 - It's the Little Things...

This week, Carole asks us to list Ten Everyday Things That Make (You) Us Happy.  Here are mine:

1.  Knitting - I knit at least a few rows everyday.
2.  Listening to classical music - I have a light classical channel on my tee vee.  I put it on in the morning after The Husb leaves for work.  It may or may not be on all day...but I do like to listen while cooking.
3.  Burning my Yankee Candles - Fresh Cut Roses is my current favorite.



4.  Drinking water - I love drinking cold water with lots of ice cubes on a summer day.
5.  Spying one of the cardinals that live in my bushes - The males are such a vibrant red!



6.  Walking outside - I try to take a power walk on most days of the week.  Some weeks, I am more successful than others...Spying one of the wild, neighborhood bunnies while on my walk is a treat too!



7.  Laughing - Some days, the laughs are harder to come by, but most every day, I can at least smile about something...
8.  Connecting with friends - Either in person, on the phone or through online bulletin boards/Yahoo lists, I like "talking" with my friends.
9.  Waking early before anyone else is up and spending a little while by myself - 'nuff said!
10. Taking bubble baths - Burning a nice smelling candle and luxuriating in a bubble bath is truly a simple pleasure!

I missed Ten on Tuesday the other day.  I really wanted to participate, but my life was not cooperating.

Ten on Tuesday - 5/22/2012 - I'd Rather Be Knitting

It's Tuesday!  That means Carole has a new topic for us, and today it is 10 Things You Wished You Liked.  Here are mine:

1. Snow skiing – My whole family skis and all are good at it. I just have a real problem with an activity in which an ambulance awaits at the bottom of the mountain.
2. Filing and paperwork wrangling – Ugh!
3. Cleaning house.
4. Exercising – I wish I could find an activity that can keep me fit, but is really fun.
5. Gardening – I tried it last summer, but the triple-digit temperatures really knocked the wind out of my sails…plus, it is an ongoing activity for those who like their garden to prosper…
6. Ironing – I used to like it…I don’t know what happened…I do it now only out of necessity.
7. Crocheting – I know some crochet stitches, but I am nowhere as fast or as adept at it as I am with knitting; so, I don’t really enjoy it.
8. Eating capers – I am Greek, and I think I am supposed to like them, considering that there are some Greek restaurants that seem to use them liberally.  It is a royal pain picking them out of my food...so, no thanks.
9. Riding roller coasters – I have motion issues in general, but I just did not enjoy riding the all two of them I have ridden in my life. Other people seem like they are having so much fun…but, not me.
10. Going camping – I would love to go camping if I had indoor plumbing, running water (with the option of heated water) and electricity….so, I’ll just stick to traveling in my RV – It’s like a really nice hotel suite on wheels.

Ten on Tuesday - 4/24/2012 - Home Sweet Home

It's been a while since I've done a Ten on Tuesday...but I've been busy, busy, busy!  Doing what?  I don't know, but I do know that I haven't had the time to blog so much...

This week, Carole asks us to list 10 Good Things About Coming Home from a Vacation:

1.  Sleeping in my own bed.
2.  Sleeping with my own pillow.  I love my pillow so much that it is a separate line item.  Sometimes, I even take it with me on trips.
3.  Having my own bathroom...and by that, I mean literally.  We have many less people around here these days, and the same number of bathrooms - so, I claimed one as my very own.  It will be so in the new house too.
4.  Cooking - or not - in my own kitchen. 
5.  Watching the tee vee shows I taped on the DVR.  Love it!  I can zip through a whole week's worth in two days, if I am being especially indulgent and nonproductive.
6.  Going through the mail.  I have always loved getting mail - even though these days it is mostly bills and ads...some medical journals...maybe a package from The Loopy Ewe or a yarn club or something from Amazon...rarely, a card...even more rare - a letter.  (Sigh...I miss letters.)
7.  Having my own (entire) closet at my disposal...or, in my case closets.
8.  I love my laundry room and being able to wash and dry things when I want to.
9.  The taste of the water in my hometown.
10. Spending time in my craftroom...my computer lives in there, as does the sewing machine, serger and the yarn for things currently OTN. It is command central around here.

I love to travel, but I am a homebody at heart.

Ten on Tuesday - 3/27/2012 - Back Up the Moving Van

Carole keeps coming up with topics that are relevant to my life...This week, we are asked to share Ten Tips for Moving.


While construction on our new house has only just begun, I know I will be eager to hear any advice that would make this monumental task a little easier. The last time we moved was almost 25 years ago. If I knew any good tips back then, I am sure I've forgotten them by now...I've got nothing, People!


This weekend, we did help DD2 move to her new apartment. It was a 230 mile move. The only thing I learned from the adventure is: Hire professionals.

Ten on Tuesday - 3/13/2012 - Pump Up The Volume!!!

We've been having cray-zee weather around here.  One day, it's wet and gray, the next it's warm and sunny...Today it's warmish and partly cloudy.  I needed a boost to get me going, and Carole delivered with today's topic 10 Songs That Put You In A Great Mood.


Well, I love music, and I can think of way more than ten songs, but I'll give you the first ten that popped into my head:



1.   To start it off, I really like Annie Lennox and 'Retha Franklin singing Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves.  That really gets my heart pumping!

Ten on Tuesday - 3/6/2012 - Bag Lady Confessions...

I have to thank Carole for this week's subject:  Ten Things in Your Purse.  By dumping out the purse I was able to 1. clean it out and 2. find the package for a set of circulars for which I had searched the house yesterday...

Here are what I consider the ten essential items in my purses:



1.  The sunglasses usually sit on top of my head like a headband, but they spend the night in the purse.
2.  The phone - I can't leave home without it.
3.  I have a little coin purse. It also holds driver's license and credit cards.
4.  I still have a Palm Pilot.  Yes...I am old school. I don't like the gmail system and my Droid info doesn't sync with my computer very well.
5.  The car key fob also has the front door keys to our house and to my mom's.
6.  This pillbox was my mom's.  It sure comes in handy to carry some calcium pills; so, I have them available to take if I am out and about.
7.  One of the most important things I carry is a pen.  One always needs a pen.  Back in the day, when I was a swinging bachelorette and would go clubbing...my little purse always had a pen.
8.  Paper is also a must...Writing a cute guy's digits on your hand is just not pretty...(Did I say that out loud?) OK, OK...That was a holdover from back in the day...These days, the things I want to write down are more varied...thoughts, lists of things to do, calls to make - boring stuff...
9.  Lipstick is the most important thing I carry.  I can't go anywhere without my shine.
10.  I carry the checkbook around out of habit.  I don't normally have to write a check while I am out and about, but it is a good place to park it and know where it is when I need to find it.

Here are some additional things that were in there that have other places to go:



I have snaps I bought at Jo Ann's yesterday for which I declined a bag, 40-in 3.00mm circulars from a little hat I made last week, free taco coupons from the Mavericks game this weekend, a Star Bucks gift card, notes about area Zumba classes, the errand list, receipts from the bottom of my bag, the errant circular needles package, a restaurant loyalty card and the shopping list with some coupons...

Yes, my purse is quite messy at times, but not today.

Ten on Tuesday - 2/28/2012 - Oscars recap

I really enjoyed watching The Academy Awards last night.  I think it was the best one in quite a while.  It wasn't perfect, but it was good overall.  I was thrilled that The Academy agreed with four of my five picks, too!

So, Carole asks us to tell Ten Thoughts on This Year's Oscars.  I have more than ten, but here are my comments:

1.  I was so happy to see Billy Crystal hosting.  He's made for the part.
2.  Michelle Williams got robbed.  I loved everyone else's performances, but...On a side note, Meryl was wearing a gold dress last night, and when I saw a clip of her last Oscar win and she was wearing a gold dress then, I thought "She's going to win tonight."
3.  Nine movies are too many nominations for Best Picture.  I would've stuck with The Artist, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, Hugo and The Help.
4.  What was with Angelina Jolie and that pose?  Does anyone else out there think she looks too thin...as in dangerously?
5.  I did not like Sandra Bullock's look for the evening.  The outfit was not flattering and that flat hairdo thing has got to go. It is too severe for her, and she has more personality than that.
6.  Melissa McCarthy should have consulted me about what to wear.
7.  I loved the clothes (except see numbers 5&6).  Some of my favorites were Mila Jovovich, Michelle Williams, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis.
8.  I thought the skit with Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey, Jr. was kind of dumb.  Gwyneth looked great though.
9.  I cannot believe that Harry Potter didn't win anything...not even the Makeup award.
10.  Why is Sasha Baron Cohen such an attention whore that he always seems to go for the bad attention?

and one more, because there are really so many more thoughts...

11.  I am so glad that Uggie was allowed to be a part of the action.

Ten on Tuesday - 1/24/2012 - I'm Ready for My Closeup Now, Mr. DeMille...

I am still alive, I just have limited communication and publishing methods available at the moment. I will have to edit this post back to my usual style once I can get my hands on more civilized methods...and there are no spell check capabilities; so, beware!


I am all o.v.e.r this week's topic for Ten on Tuesday. Carole asks us to list Ten Movies You Want to See Right Now.. The Oscar nominations have just been announced, and there are seven movies nominated for the "big five" that I haven't seen yet:

Ten on Tuesday - 1/10/2012 - Soup's On!!!

This week, Carole asks us to tell our Ten Favorite Soups.  It's a great day to eat soup around here today - gray, cold, wet...

I love soup.  I love many different kinds, but here are ten that quickly come to mind:
1.  Lentil soup - my mom's recipe...straight forward with lentils, onions, carrots, garlic, water and a little olive oil for sauteing.  Yum!
2.  Split pea soup...again, another Momma recipe and not too many ingredients, but so filling.
3.  My momma also made a chickpea soup that I just love.  She was great with minimal ingredients and big taste.
4.  Avgolemono (Lemon Egg) Soup...Yep, it's another Momma specialty.  This one is a little more involved, as we make our own chicken or turkey broth (after Thanksgiving or Christmas...it is a must to use that leftover carcass), but it is so worth it.
5.  Momma's Beef Stew - all my kids love this one...even some of their friends.
6.  Chicken Tortilla Soup, although I haven't had a good one since Tia's closed.
7.  La Madelaine's Tomato Basil
8.  Campbell's Cream of Tomato Soup - with grilled cheese sandwiches, please.  My mom asked me to make this for supper sometimes, when the boys were gone and it was just the two of us...
9.  Lobster Bisque - Truluck's makes a good one.
10.  The borscht at Nikolai's Roof in Atlanta, Georgia...love it.  Sadly, I haven't been to Atlanta in a while.

I am so thankful that I learned how to make the soups my momma made; so, I can make them anytime I am hungry for them.  I guess I should learn how to make some of the others - except Cambell's can keep making the Cream of Tomato for me.

I think I may make soup for tonight's supper now...

Ten on Tuesday - 1/3/2012 - The List

I have given up with New Year's Resolutions.  I do write down lists of things that I'd like to accomplish in the coming year, but it is more of a goal setting exercise.  Carole asks us to tell Ten Things That We Want to Do in 2012. 

When I wrote my lists of goals for this year, I noticed that it is rather chore oriented, but I have several "projects" on my plate, and I would really try to get them done.  In the last almost year and a half, The Husb and I lost our remaining parental units. Consequently, we have some additonal real estate that needs attention.  I have listed the big things here and I tried to include some fun things too:  (I write l.i.s.t.s of goals, and trust me when I say, there are way more than ten things I'd like to accomplish this year.)

1.  Decrapify and organize the paperwork files...I really hate paperwork, and I've really let it get out of hand.
2.  Finish cleaning out and sell my mother's house.
3.  Finish cleaning out and sell my inlaw's house.
4.  Finish cleaning out the condo...we might keep this one.
5.  Settlle the estate for which I am the executor.
6.  Study for and pass my recertification test.
7.  Knit from stash to reduce it by one-third this year...If I buy yarn through the year, I will have to knit that much more...
8.  Send some cards and letters...like through the mail.
9.  Spend more time with friends...and be sure to tell them how much they mean to me.
10.  Do at least one fun thing and find joy daily.

Ten on Tuesday - Christmas Lists

Imagine my surprise just now when I came upon my blog, since I am contemplating a WIP Wednesday post, and notice that my Ten on Tuesday post didn't publish.  Well, maybe because it was saved as a draft...

I back-dated it, because I am "detail oriented" that way.  (I know what phrase you are thinking instead...)

This week, with Christmas being only days away, Carole asks us to tell 10 Things You Have to Do Before Christmas.  Here is my list:

1.  Wrap four gifts…but they haven’t come yet.

2.  Finalize the actual date our family will celebrate Christmas…Christmas Eve v. Christmas Day Night…Don’t ask.

3.  Pull out all the serving dishes and utensils.

4.  Double check the pantry to make sure I have everything I need.

5.  Bake – I think this year, it will just be pumpkin bread, zucchini muffins and some cookies.

6.  Finish writing thank you notes for stuff The Husb has been getting at the office.

7.  Pick up the grands and drive down to the Big D to see the Christmas lights.

8.  Deliver the baked gifts.

9.  Watch It’s a Wonderful Life at some point on Christmas Eve.
10.  Enjoy my family and friends.

Ten on Tuesday - 12/13/2011 - For the Hostest with the Mostest

This week, Carole asks us to tell Ten Hostess Gift Ideas.

Here is my list of things that I like to give and receive:
1.  Flowers always put a smile on people's faces.
2. There are so many wines out there...It is hard to choose.
3.  Chocolates - make mine dark!
4.  Homemade cookies are great, especially if you have a specialty that everyone likes.
5.  Homemade bread or muffins...I like zucchini bread or pumpkin bread or banana nut bread.
6.  A fruit and cheese basket is a healthy treat!
7.  I really love kitchen towels. I especially like holiday themed ones.
8.  A nice shower gel or lotion (or both) from Bath and Body Works.
9.  Handmade soaps add a nice touch to a powder room.
10. There are so many pretty decorative candles, and they don't have to be scented.

I will leave you with something hysterical I saw the other day...



...and no, I won't be giving it as a hostess gift to anyone I know.
