Happy Memorial Day!

Dustin Lance Black won the Oscar for writing the screenplay for Milk. Black wrote a memoir about his life - from his Morman upbringing to becoming a gay rights activist, and the relationship with his mother is woven all through it. Mama’s Boy is adapted from this memoir. It was very good.

Margot Robbie, Christian Bale and John David Washington play three friends who get tangled in a murder-conspiracy in Amsterdam. Anya Taylor-Joy, Taylor Swift, Chris Rock, Rami Malik and Zoe Saldana are also in this campy but fun film. I enjoyed it.

Only one book - what have I been doing with my life lately?

Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson
A study of class structure and hierarchy is at the forefront of this novel about the members of a family. It was alright.

WIP Wednesday - 5/24/2023

I’ve been sewing everyday for the last few days, but since I have so many projects going - nothing is getting finished. Everything is getting furthered along.

Today, I’m working on the borders and the backing for one of the quilts currently on the go.

Movie Monday - 5/22/2023

It was a one movie week again.

She Said is a dramatic accounting of the article two New York Times reporters (Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey investigated and wrote about Harvey Weinstein that launched the #metoo movement. There were so many amazing actors in it - my favorite Patricia Clarkson, Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan, Samantha Morton and Ashley Judd (as herself), just to name a few. It was very, very good.

Movie Monday - 5/15:2023

It was another one movie week. As pictured below, I’ve been otherwise engaged.

In Sophie Jones, Jessica Barr plays a teenager whose mother recently died. She struggles to keep it together while she tries to cope with her grief. It was alright.

Movie Monday - 5/8/2023

was only able to watch one movie last week, but it was a good one.

June Again is about a woman with dementia who has been living in a skilled nursing facility. One day, she becomes lucid and busts out of the place, only to find that the life she remembered has changed dramatically. Noni Hazelhurst, the formidable Elizabeth Bligh from A Place to Call Home stars as June. It was delightful, yet poignant. I enjoyed it very much.

Book Chat - 5/4/2023

am almost ready to get back to my beach reads, but I’ve got a few on the list I will read first.

Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling
The story is told from the perspective of three groups of people with some flashbacks. It’s a dystopian novel set in a future where climate change has made the southern parts of North America virtually uninhabitable. It was going along just fine and I was looking forward to seeing how all the threads would tie together, but then they didn’t really. The book just ended. It was not a satisfying read.

Happy May 1st!

I watched some documentaries this week. I enjoyed both of them.

Audrey tells the life of Audrey Hepburn. There’s archived footage, family pictures, and interviews with family and friends. She had lived through so much, yet remained a beautiful beacon of light.

In The Center Will Not Hold, we learn about Joan Didion’s fascinating life. Her nephew Griffin Dunne directed the documentary, but he also narrates and interviews Joan in places through it. There are personal accounts told by Joan, as well as by some of her closest friends. She had a fascinating life.
