Movie Monday - 4/14/2025

Greetings peeps! Here’s this past week’s movies:

In Shiva Baby, a young woman attends a Shiva and runs into her ex-girlfriend. If that’s not bad enough, her current boyfriend shows up with his wife and baby. She didn’t know about the wife and baby. It was alright.

The Daytrippers is an old movie starring many good actors - Including Hope Davis, Stanley, Tucci, and Mira and Parker Posey. A woman finds a love letter in her husband’s things. She and her family set off to confront him. I liked it.

In the short, Closing Dynasty, a street wise young girl tries to improve her family’s circumstances. It was cute.

Movie Monday - 4/7/2025

It’s Monday again. And that means movies…

I rewatched An Affair to Remember because it was about to leave Netflix. Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant were magnificent in their iconic roles. A couple who fall in love on a ship agree to dump their current relationships and meet up on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in six months. It’s a classic!

The Life List is about a young woman whose mother has just died. In order to receive her inheritance, she must complete the list she wrote as a thirteen-year-old. It was a little predictable, but sweet.

FO Friday - 4/5/2025

Y’all should see my sewing studio. There’s fabric/pattern combos of things I’d like to make. There’s a couple of started things and there’s almost finished things. And there’s fabric and patterns that are waiting to find each other.

I pieced and quilted this baby at the end of 2023. It has needed a binding since then.  Sadly, the dash got in the way until just recently when I hopped on it.

It’s the companion quilt to the one on the left. Leftie was made in 2016. I had plenty of leftovers from the fat quarter collection to make another. I cut out the rectangles and promptly stored them in the closet.  (There’s still some leftovers.) I needed more fabric for the background and backing, but couldn’t source any like the first. I found some that was close and put it with the rectangles in the closet. And there it sat until 2023.

I have been wanting to make these pillowcases since before Christmas. Last weekend was apparently the time to get them done.

Remember that baseball jersey quilt for The Kid? I’m working on the binding.

Movie Monday - March 31, 2025

It’s the end of the month already. Where did March go? At least I was able to watch a few flicks in the past week.

Based on a true story, Sing Sing tells about the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing prison. The story revolves around the man in the group who put together and act the plays. Several former inmates appear in the movie as themselves. Colman Domingo stars in the film. He was nominated for best actor and he did a marvelous job. I liked it.

Nicolas Cage stars in Dream Scenario, in which he plays a college professor/family man who starts showing up in people‘s dreams. At first, it’s sort of a novelty, but then the dream start turning very dark and people’s lives are affected. It was alright.

Since I loved the book, I watched The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. It was a pretty good adaptation. Of course the book was more layered, but the movie told enough of the story and was entertaining. I loved the acting.- Kunal Nayyar, Lucy Heyl, Christina Hendricks, David Arquette, and Scott Foley were great at making their characters come alive. I loved it!

That’s all for now.

Book Chat - 3/27/2025

I read several books this month and I’m here to tell you about them.

Happy After All by Maisey Yates

Amelia left her big city life and bought a motel to overcome her painful secret. One day, a rather mysterious man with painful secrets of his own, checks in to the motel. Things heat up in more ways than one in this book. It was cute.

Broken Bayou by Jennifer Moorhead

After a television interview goes bad and goes viral, Willa needs a change of scenery. She returns to the town where she spent her childhood summers to pick up some of her mother’s belongings and walks right into a murder mystery. It was good.

The Rules of Fortune by Danielle Prescod

A billionaire dies unexpectedly. His daughter had been investigating her father’s past for a tribute video, but then learns some things about his business that threatens to destroy the family’s legacy. It was pretty good.

The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

A widower takes in a foundling and introduces her into his world of books. They help each other navigate life. The book has been adapted into a movie. You can watch it on Netflix.) It was an enjoyable read.

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

In a small town in Missouri, girls are disappearing. A local boy saves one from getting taken, but ends up getting snatched instead. It was dark, twisty and very good. I think it is the best book I’ve read so far this year.

Something Like Fate by Amy Lea

Two best friends take a trip to Italy - one looking for her soulmate and one getting over his recent breakup. It was a delightful read.

Movie Monday -

I really need to watch some movies, as my list just keeps getting longer. I have managed to watch a few though.

In You are Cordially Invited, shenanigans ensue, when two weddings are booked on the same weekend at a small resort. Reese Witherspoon plays the sister of one ride, and Will Ferrell plays the father of the other bride. It was cute.

Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg It’s a documentary about the woman who was very influential with the Rolling Stones. She was a model and actress. She had a relationship with Keith Richards. They had three children together. After her death, her family found a never published memoir. The film includes much of her words from the document. It was interesting.

Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn star in Daddio. A woman returns from a trip and grabs a cab at the airport. During the ride, the cabbie and she exchanged thoughts and experiences. It was really good. I’m surprised that it didn’t get nominated for more awards than it did.
